Common names: Bermuda grass, Durva grass, Bahama grass (because of its introduction to U.S. by way of Bahama Islands) Doob grass, Dhub grass, kweek grass, couch grass, quack grass, twitch grass, star grass.
Scientific Name: Cynodom dactylon
Feed categories: Green roughages
Physical Characteristics:
Durva grass (Cynodon dactylon) has short flat leaves; leaves are gray and blue-green. The ligule has a ring of white hairs which is one of its identifying characteristics. The spikelets are borne in four or five slender spikes at the tips of the upright stems. Extensively creeping stolons and rhizomes enable the plant to establish a dense turf.
Production / Availability:
Durva grass (Cynodon dactylon Pers.) is a major tropical grass found in all tropical and subtropical areas. It is highly tolerant to drought and heavy grazing and therefore extremely valuable for pasture. It is also used for cut-and-carry, hay and deferred feed. Doob grass is one of the best fodders and is a good soil binder. It is perennial with creeping habit. It contains moderate protein and is propagated by stem and root cuttings. It is of moderate nutritional value. Durva grass is a highly variable, hardy, long-lived perennial grass, and one of the most used warm-season forages in the world. This stoloniferous and rhizomatous grass forms dense leafy mats that can reach 10-40 cm (-90 cm) high.
