Common Name: Goum, Wheat distillers’ grain, wheat
Scientific Name: Triticum aestivum L.
Feed Categories: Cereal grains and by-products
Production/ Availability:
Wheat grain (Triticum spp.) is a major staple food that provides about 20% of food energy and protein worldwide. Wheat is also an excellent energy source for farm animals: in 2007, 102 million tons (16.7% of worldwide production) were used to feed animals. Wheat is the world`s most important crop. It is grown primarily for human consumption. Wheat belongs to the genus Triticum. Wheat is superior to maize in protein content and quality. Wheat is a good source of energy containing 75-80% TDN. In 2020, wheat production for Bangladesh was 1,250 thousand tonnes. Over the last 22 years, wheat production in Bangladesh was decreasing on average by 0.18% each year, although before that, it grew from 111 thousand tonnes in 1973 to 1,988 thousand tonnes in 1999. Wheat grain is basically a source of energy in the form of carbohydrates (starch) enclosed in outer layers that form the bran. Wheat grain is highly palatable and is a digestible source of nutrients for all classes of farm animals.
Physical Characteristics:
Main physical properties that influence quality of wheat are test weight, hardness, grain size and shape, virtuousness and color. The color of wheat grain varies from light brown to off white and the odor is fresh and free from mustiness.
